Monthly Meetings at CMARC
Meetings of the Central Michigan Amateur Radio Club are a great way to meet a lot of the people you talk to on our local repeaters. But it's also a means of learning new and exciting things about our Great Hobby.
Meetings take place at 7:30 PM the 2nd Friday of every month at the Salvation Army building at 701 West Jolly Rd in Lansing.
We've added this page in order to share some photos of our past meetings, the speakers, a few honors we've passed out and GOOD FOOD, too!
August 2010 Meeting:
At the August CMARC meeting we were joined by many new Hams and visitors with lots of young faces in the crowd. Gregg Mulder WB8LZG gave a report about the success of his building classes. The classes are being held at our new Club Station and the room has been full every Tuesday night! Tom Rocheleau WA8WPI gave us more details about his Morse code classes starting this Fall:
Starting Tuesday, September 14th at 7pm, Tom Rocheleau/WA8WPI will be teaching “Morse Code For Beginners” at the Salvation Army Building, 701 W. Jolly Road in Lansing (the same location as our CMARC meetings). The classes will be about 1 hour long each and will continue for 6 to 7 weeks, depending on the progress of the students. Paper will be provided, but please bring your favorite writing instrument. The most important detail about the classes for those wanting to learn CW is that they are FREE!!
Corey Bulock KD8BOQ gave his announcement about how the Youth Net has been going. The first net had 23 Check-Ins!
This month's program was Nancy Hepfer who gave a demonstration and answered questions about the AED (Automated External Defibrillator). She explained how to save someone's life using the device. She also explained that you should be able to locate them in most public buildings. We really appreciated the informative presentation!
July 2010 Meeting:
The July CMARC meeting included a flurry of announcements from members of the club. Ron Harger WD8BCS gave a Field Day report on exactly how everything went and how we did as a club. Gregg Mulder WB8LZG once again announced and discussed exactly what the different kits are that he will be putting together with a group of people in the next few weeks. Sounds like a fun and interesting time! Gregg's announcement was followed by Tom Rocheleau WA8WPI who announced he will be putting on a Morse Code class this fall. If anyone wishes to contact him he can be reached at517-628-3151 to sign up. Yet another event was announced by Carl Canfield K8YHH. He will be heading up two committees. One will be to help clean up and prepare the CMARC antennas for the tower once it is up at our new location (the tower should be going up in the next few weeks!). Also, Carl is forming a committee to evaluate what all the Club has in the club room, take inventory, and figure out what we are going to do with any old equipment. Please contact Carl if you wish to help with either of these ventures!
Our busy meeting was followed by a WONDERFUL meal thanks to Julie McClain KB8ZXR and Jane Hosford KC8FSK. They had hot dogs, brats and sauerkraut, meatballs, fruit, and lots more! Everything was incredible and I don't think anyone went home hungry. It was a real treat!
The meeting was followed by a program from Under 22 Director Corey Bulock KD8BOQ. Details about the presentation and download of the presentation are availabe on the Youth Page. Everything went very well!
June 2010 Meeting:
The June CMARC meeting was the dedication of the new CMARC Club room in honor of Silent Key Don Devendorf W8EGI. Don's wife, daughter and other family members were present. President Sharon KD8HHK found a beautiful plaque for the club room and it will hang in the club room for life of the club station.
The June meeting was also for preparation and conversation about the upcomming Field Day. Much excitement is building up and it sounds like Field Day 2010 is going to be a very good time! Fox hunts, VE Testing, and a Club Picnic are only the tip of the ice berg for Saturday June 26th!
Under 22 Director Corey KD8BOQ promoted the July meeting for the Youth Program. Details will only be revieled next month!
The new club radio was also on display. The new club station is starting to shape up!
Don Devendorf W8EGI's family was present at the dedication of the new club room.
The new Club Radio was present. Tommy (Grandson of President KD8HHK and Treasurer KD8GLN) presents the fifty-fifty raffle in very trustworthy T-Shirt.
Due to high success the previous week at the Annual Ladies' Night Banquet, the May meeting was in lower attendance. The meeting had about half of the usual attendance and there was no program for this month.
During the meeting President Sharon (KD8HHK) announced the official resignation from Erv (W8ERV) from his position as Scope Editor and Website Assistant. Although Erv will help make the transition to the next person for the job a slow and painless ordeal, he does not wish to continue on in full capacity. He has decided that for the time being School work and family deserve his full attention.
Under 22 Director Corey (KD8BOQ) gave the report on the progress at the Amateur Radio Club at Holt High School. He voiced his frustration with the school bureaucracy and his many, many attempts to get a room squared away for the approved club. Since the meeting good progress has been made and there is a strong possibility that there will be GREAT news to report at the June meeting.
Besides mild confusion with a literal false alarm at the Salvation Army building (all issues have been solved and were not in fault of any CMARC members), the meeting was a brief but successful one with hopes for more next month. The June meeting will have good news to report as CMARC continues to grow and gain momentum, followed by a great program about things to look for at the 2010 Field Day! Hope to see you next month!
More Pictures from Ladies' Night the week BEFORE the meeting:

Julie
(KB8ZXR) shares laughs with new Ham Victor (AC8FK). New ham Chris (KD8MJJ)
later enjoys a good time once again with apparent comedian Victor (AC8FK)
as they both attend their First Ladies' Night.

Corey
(KD8BOQ) is lucky to find himself between Ladies' Night Coordinator Julie
(KB8ZXR) and President Sharon (KD8HHK). New ham John (KD8LDN) is happy to
be attending his first Ladies' Night with his son Sean (KD8LDM).
April 2010 Meeting:
Members listen intently to Ken's presentation which was a sobering look at the recovery and restoration process after a major event, such as the earthquake in Haiti.
The April Meeting was an exciting one with the presentation of the new field day T-Shirt. Get your Field Day T-Shirt and be a part of the group this June!
The meeting was followed by a great presentation from Ken Pearce (N4KCD). Ken was among the first on the ground during the devasting Haiti earthquake. We have been lucky to have great presentations for the year of 2010. The new location and club room have sparked motivation and progression at CMARC!
March 2010 Meeting:

We
had a full house at the March meeting. The second meeting in a row with
60 people. John (NO8T), Jim Hannahs (KC8QWH). Listen to Jim Geyer with CMARC's
new SATERN Cadre Leader, Clint Hannahs (KC8EHR).
The CMARC meeting was another productive one for March. Life Time Membership certificates were handed out to proud CMARC members. Also, it was announced that about $600 have been donated so far to the new club station. Erv (W8ERV) suggested to the board and the membership that the club purchase new computers and projector to bring the club up to speed in the world of technology. The membership embraced the idea of a new projector which was voted to purchase immediately (at the price found by Erv). However the membership will be looking in to other possibilities on computers. To help get this new club up and running we are still accepting donations and greatly appreciate it! A plaque will still be made thanking those who do donate.
Don Shuler and wife, Sue (daughter of W8EGI), along with Don's wife, Jean Devendorf with the photo presented to CMARC at the March meeting.
CMARC members were honored to be joined by Don Devendorf's family members as the new large framed photo of Don Devendorf and Ralph Ziegenbein was presented at the meeting. This photo is definitely one to remember and it is wonderful that it is now in such a large, high quality format.

WLNS
Meteorologist, Jim Geyer (KD8CHU) addresses the CMARC meeting in March.
Les (KD8MDD) and Don (KD8BD) enjoying the presentation.
Thanks to Board Member Don (KB8RAD), new ham and WLNS Meteorologist Jim Geyer (KD8CHU) gave the presentation at the March meeting. He described his history in the field and his professional relationships with colleagues from other stations in the area followed by a question and answer session. Jim was an easy presenter for the crowd to warm up to, and everyone enjoyed the information that he had to share.
February 2010 Meeting:
Jim
(KC8QWH) receives a Life Membership from President Sharon (KD8HHK). Dan
(W8BCI) serves as pre-meeting entertainment on the piano.
If you missed the first meeting at the new CMARC location there is no need to worry, there is lots more in store for the months to come. The CMARC Radio Room and meetings are both at the new location.
Julie (KB8ZXR) welcomes members to the meeting. Carl (K8YHH),
Corey (KD8BOQ), and Jerry (KD8GLN) fill out the 2010 questionare and think
about things they would like to see CMARC accomplish in the year to come.
This new location promises more technical programs, more meet-ups for Club Station use, and growth in the club. Everyone is motivated and ready to see CMARC rise to places it has never been before and the club needs help to see it happen. If you haven't volunteered to help before and would like to be a part of all this, help will be needed in the following areas:
-A monthly meeting set-up/tear-down crew for tables and chairs.
-A monthly clean up crew to sweep and possibly mop the floors.
-Volunteers to help with the tower project and movement to the new location.
-Volunteers to move club equipment to its new home from Bob's (K8RDN) house.
CMARC's future looks very promising and with a joint effort from it's members, goals can be achieved and exceeded. If you would like to be a part of all this and join one of the following crews or volunteer please contact President Sharon (KD8HHK).
